Where is Punta Cana?

Planning a trip to the Caribbean soon? Can’t decide where to journey to exactly? Well, Punta Cana may very well be the place for you. “Punta” in Spanish translates to the English words “point” or “cape” and “Caña” which was later changed by its American investors to “Cana” translates to the English words “cane” or “palm trees”.

Whatever the case may be this “Cape of the Sugarcanes” or “Point of Palm trees” is located on the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, abutting both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and boasts a variety of attractions that will guarantee a fun-filled and memorable vacation.

History of the Puntacana – Bavaro Area

Prior to American investment in 1969, the region was a low population fishing village which lacked modern infrastructure. The area was filled with dense jungles. However, upon encountering the natural beauty of the previously named Punta Borrachon (‘the Drunken Point). This area consisted of white sand beaches, clear water, coconut palms, lush vegetation, and breathtaking coral reefs. The American investors began to see its potential  and established Punta Cana’s first hotel in 1971 which was named the Punta Cana  Club. The tourism industry was slow at first and was nothing compared to what we see today.

Prior to American investment in 1969, Punta Cana was a low population fishing village which lacked modern infrastructure and was filled with dense jungles.

The population of Punta Cana today

The Population of Punta Cana has been estimated to 43,982 with an annual growth rate of 6% . This information is based on the last census conducted in the Dominican Republic in 2012.

The Punta Cana Club had only 10 rooms and a maximum capacity of 40 guests which was only accessible by a dirt airstrip. This could only accommodate small planes. Word of this brand new exotic getaway spread and in 1978 the French built the 350 room Club Med Punta Cana. Owing to this expansion in a tourist capacity, the multimillion-dollar Multinational Company Colgate subsequently built a road. This road reduced travel time and in 1984 the first commercial airstrip was built by the owners of the Punta Cana Resort. This new infrastructure increased further tourist arrival. Several improvements were made to diminish the remoteness of the area and in 2012 the new Coral highway connected this town to the rest of the island.

Punta Cana today

Currently, the area boasts over 60 resorts and has a multicultural population of over 100,000 people who are mainly of European, African and indigenous descent. Accommodation in this zone is not limited to high-end brand name hotels and resorts but also includes budget-friendly beachside thatched roofed huts, motels, condos, villas, guesthouses, and even community tourism. Owing to Punta Cana’s close proximity to the coast ,there is a 9/10 chance you’ll either be staying on or near popular beaches such as the Punta Cana Beach, Playa Bavaro, Playa de Arena Gorda, Uvero Alto, Playa Juanillo, Playa de El Cortecito, etc which affords a great view of the flora and fauna.

Cap Cana

The most iconic spot in this area is Cap Cana. Which is the last decade has turned into one of the most renowned luxury tourist destinations in this area and the whole Caribbean. Cap Cana has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world: Playa Juanillo. This beautiful coastline full of palm trees is quiet with little mass tourism and with ultra-luxury hotels and facilities such as Sanctuary Cap Cana, Alsol Luxury Village. Alsol Tiara Collection, Alsol del Mar and Villas Caletón. It has a spectacular marina and majestic golf courses designed by the legendary champion Jack Nicklaus, has Scape Cap Cana, an ecological area with caves and fun areas. Its beaches are treated daily by the staff of the Cap Cana complex, Playa Juanillo has a cafe / bar with a wide range of food and drinks, kayaks and small sailboats for rent. The hotels within Cap Cana are all 5 stars, it has a magnificent marina.

Punta Cana boasts over 60 resorts and has a multicultural population of over 100,000 people

But that’s not all. The fun in this zone is not restricted to the day-time. With casinos, cigar and hookah lounges, dance clubs, discos, bars, live performances filled with acrobats and dancers, nighttime cave raves and water activities, the whole area is regarded as having one of the best fight scenes in the Caribbean. If that’s not enough to convince you of Punta Cana’s awesomeness, tourism activity in this area contributes nearly a quarter of the GDP of the Dominican Republic. Is perfect for persons who crave adventure and full Caribbean experience. It is also great for those who may unwind in seclusion. Whatever you prefer, Punta Cana offers it all.
